With the exception of certain specific instances described below, you have the absolute right to the confidentiality of your therapy. The therapists of Connecticut Center cannot and will not tell anyone else what you have told us, or even that you are in therapy with us without your prior written permission. We will always act so as to protect your privacy even if you do release us in writing to share information about you. You may direct us to share information with whomever you choose, and you can change your mind and revoke that permission at any time. One exception to this confidentiality is that our responsibilities as therapists require that we consult professionally with other therapists about our work. This is done in a way that protects the anonymity of our clients and they remain unidentifiable. If you inform us that there is a particular person with whom you would not want even this anonymous consultation to occur, we will respect your wishes.
The following are legal exceptions to your right to confidentiality. The therapists of Connecticut Center would inform you should we at any time think we will have to put these into effect:
If the therapists of Connecticut Center have good reason to believe that you will harm another person, we must attempt to inform that person and warn them of your intentions. We must also contact the police and ask them to protect your intended victim.
If the therapists of Connecticut Center have good reason to believe that you are abusing or neglecting a child or vulnerable adult, or if you give us information about someone else who is doing this, we must inform the appropriate authorities.
If the therapists of Connecticut Center believe that you are in imminent danger of harming yourself, we may legally break confidentiality and call the police or the mental health crisis team. We would explore all other options with you before we took this step.
If you are filing a complaint or are a plaintiff in a lawsuit, it is possible that the therapists of Connecticut Center or our notes - medical records - may be subpoenaed. Please let us know if you are in this kind of situation so that we can take the utmost care possible to protect your privacy in our records.
